Leading By Example

Among the successful educational leaders with whom I work, there is one core group driven by compassion. They see their calling – to ensure all students are given every possible opportunity during their school life – as having few boundaries.

At one of my recent workshops, these extraordinary leaders didn’t disappoint.

Some months ago I was approached by a parent who was desperately raising funds for her teenage daughter to participate in an annual NASA Space Camp for the visually impaired – a camp attended by select secondary school students from across the globe.

The school her daughter attends has a strong belief in the value of camps; most students attend Year 7 orientation camps, and many Year 9 students attend leadership camps. For others there are more exclusive destinations like New York, as an arts focus can also strategically fall into the category of a camp.

When asked for help, the school council enthusiastically supported the NASA Space Camp, and contributed a three-figure sum. Although very much appreciated, it left a shortfall of more than $3000. Which is why the parent approached me.

A few years ago, I met a number of students who had attended the NASA Space Camp, so I knew first hand what a life-changing and valuable experience it could be. So, at the workshop, I shared the story with a room full of educational leaders. I suggested that, if they felt so inclined, a gold coin donation would be appreciated.

Within minutes I had a cup full of gold and silver coins, as well as a number of $10 and $20 notes.

As thrilled as I was to see the NASA experience come within reach, the greater thrill was that these principals were from the Catholic Education sector and the student in need attended a public school.

This is what sets extraordinary leaders apart. This is compassionate leadership in action.
